34 years ago, on February 15, 1989, the Soviet Union withdrew its last troops from Afghanistan.
These photographs are from the Soviets' ten-year stay (1979-1989) in Afghanistan, telling about their war, recreation, and construction.
The people of Afghanistan fought heroically against Soviet aggression and sacrificed more than 1.5 million people, but the fruits of this "holy jihad" went to the United States and the West. The remains of the jihad were the wreckage of the Soviet tanks and cannons and the ruins of dozens of buildings and enterprises created by the Soviet Union.
Afghanistan is still burning and its people are still dying.
