At least 15 people were killed and injured as a result of the conflict between the Taliban and the local population in the Daraim district of Badakhshan province.

A source in the Badakhshan police department told Sangar that yesterday (Thursday, 21 Savr - 11 May) Taliban forces arrived in the villages of Nawabad and Duabae Tagab of the Daraim district and began to destroy poppy fields cultivated by people, which as a result faced a reaction and protests of people.

“They asked the Taliban to stop this work because the only income and bread for their family is poppy cultivation, but the Taliban opened fire on them and the people were forced to take up arms and respond,” the source said.

According to initial information provided by the Taliban police in Badakhshan, four peasants were killed and about ten others, including women and children, were injured.

But a local source reports that as a result of this conflict, two Taliban were killed, and a company commander and deputy's head of the Taliban district administration in Daraim were seriously injured. According to this source, the number of deaths among local residents was 3, and the number of injured was 7.

“Armed men from two villages drove the Taliban out of the area, and have occupied a stronghold at the base near the Duab school, where the Afghan National Army troops were previously stationed,” the source said.

Meanwhile, according to another source, tribal elders and local Taliban leaders gathered in Shahri Safa, the center of the Daraim district, to discuss the situation.

Mawlawi Abdulghani, the former governor of Badakhshan and the top Taliban commander of the Daraim district, also made his way to the center of the district from the city of Faizabad, the provincial capital. At the same time, rumors spread about the possible arrival of Mawlawi Amanuddin, the Taliban governor in Badakhshan.

The latest news is that some locals have taken refuge in the mountains, fearing a Taliban retaliatory attack, and are preparing for war.
