The greatest provision for a woman is the love of a woman, not money.

One of our sisters from Kabul, who was in the sociology class I taught, asked me two questions and asked not to mention her name. This week we will answer one of these questions.

The first question is: What are the conditions for a man to marry two or three wives?

First, we should know that there are four types of marriages in the life of mankind from the point of view of anthropology, and I have explained these marriages in detail in the book “Islamic Sociology”.

The first step is monogamy when a man or woman has only one spouse.

The second is polygyny when a man or woman marries several men or women at the same time.

The third is polygamy when a man marries several women at the same time. In the United States of America, in the Mormon religion, which is part of Christianity, one man can marry even twenty women.

The fourth is polyandry when a woman marries several men at the same time. This type of marriage, in which a woman has several husbands simultaneously, is popular in Tibet, an independent region of China, and in the Marquesas Islands, located in the South Pacific.

Of these four types of marriage, Islam has allowed two: monogamy and polygamy, but imposed conditions and restrictions.

First, Islam does not allow having more than four wives, and this also has special conditions.

The first condition is that the first wife permits her husband when he justifies his need for a second wife.

The second condition: if the first wife allows it, the man must treat the second wife emotionally and materially as the first wife, otherwise he must be content with one wife.

The third condition is that the man must pay a dowry. There is no such dowry in America, and the man does not bear the slightest responsibility towards his wife.

Fourthly, the woman must consent. That is, without the consent of the widow or young girl, no one who is a woman or young girl has the right to marry her to a man without permission.

This issue was mentioned in the Holy Quran because men at that time abused women and were not held accountable for it. Secondly, some men died in jihad for the cause of Islam, and their wives were left without guardians. And since women did not work at that time, there were no universities or jobs that is important in modern life, and so that they could provide for themselves and their children were not poor, they were allowed to marry or become a second or third wife.

The conditions for marrying two or three women are very strict, and for this reason, many men are content with monogamy and do not marry a second wife, especially if they do not have a justifiable excuse for the first wife.

Islam is a religion of justice, and this justice begins at the micro level of the family. In monogamy, a man has only one wife and is the breadwinner, but the greatest nourishment for a woman is love for her, not food. God provides sustenance and food, but a man must have a good relationship with his wife, based on morality and human dignity.

Islamic countries are being driven into such a hole where they have no choice but to choose one of two evils.
